The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will offer adaptive hiking for individuals with disabilities, their families and friends at Breakheart Reservation located off Forest Street in Saugus, MA on Saturday, July 29th. Assistive equipment and teamwork will help people of all abilities access conventional hiking trails at a leisurely pace. DCR Park Ranger Matthew Nash will be providing nature lessons along the trail as we stop to rest. Adaptive equipment includes Terra Trek manual wheelchairs, baby joggers, walkers, crutches, and gait belts, as well as staff instruction, will be provided to help people of all abilities enjoy hiking in a safe environment.
This activity is open to individuals with disabilities, their families and friends for $2 per person, $4 for families or $10 for groups.
Volunteers are also needed for this event. It is sponsored by DCR?s Universal Access Program (UAP) administered through Venture Into Well-Being, working together in an effort to expand accessible outdoor recreation opportunities.
Along with hiking opportunities such as this, UAP also provides accessible boating, cycling, camping, horseback riding and bird watching programs in Massachusetts? state and urban parks throughout the summer and fall for individuals with disabilities, their family and friends. UAP strives to increase participation among persons with disabilities in outdoor recreational activities in integrated settings.
