Description:
Concerned with repeated proposals to expand the RESCO waste incinerator located within the Rumney Marshes Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) in Saugus, local and statewide environmental groups will present the incinerator owners, RESCO with a 2003 Dirty Dozen Award.
By proposing to add a third burner and increase the height of the ash landfill from 50 to 90 feet, RESCO officials have ignored state
environmental regulations that prohibit expansion of waste incinerators within an ACEC. Residents also cite concerns about dioxin and mercury, ongoing violations at the facility, and threats to public health effects such as elevated rates of cancer in the area, as major reasons for opposing the incinerator expansion.
The 7th Annual Dirty Dozen Awards spotlight twelve of the Commonwealth's top polluters. These sites pose a significant threat to public health and the environment and need immediate action by industry and/or government officials. The Dirty Dozen were selected from a set of nominations by an eight-member panel of environmental and public health professionals.
GREAT VISUALS AND AN AWARD PRESENTATION.
