In 1993 my parents bought a house in Fenton, MI. It was built in 1889 and had been in the same family for a long time. I was born in 1994 so I don't remember a lot about it. I have seen pictures of it. It was big with a huge, stone front porch. When they bought the house it didn't have a kitchen (someone had already ripped it out). My parents spent a yearfixing upthe house. They tried to keep everything like it was when it was newand even worked on the gardens, making them lookhow they looked in the past. My mom said that sometimes during the day when the house was very quiet and I was napping she could swear she heard someone whisper her name. She did as much research as she could on the house, going to Fenton's local musuem and looking through archives. She found out that the house had been built by a sea captain that had started working as a 10 year old boy on ships sailing from England. He lived in the house with his wife but they never had any children. There wasn't a lot more information on them. It stayed in another family after they died through aboutthe1940's and then the Stroms owned it from the 1950's untilrightbefore we bought it. We didn't live there long, mom and dad sold it after a year and a half. They were afraid I might get out into the busy street the house was on.They built another house on a quiet street that was close to Fenton's cemetary.
Mom used to put me in the wagon and take walks through the cemetary. It was very big, over a mile square. One day inOctober, 1997she was pulling me in the wagon and she found a path through a kind-of forest area of the cemetary that was covered over by weeds and stuff, onall of our walks we had never been up it. She said she was pulling me along and started thinking about the old house and RIGHT AT THE MINUTE she wondered if the Captain and his wife were burried there, she got abig shiver up her spine, looked down to her right and there they were! Two small, flat headstones set into the ground, side by side kinda grown up with weeds. She said she ran down the path, out of the woods with me hanging on to the sides of the wagon for dear life. Maybe they liked what she did with the house, I don't know but we didn't walk in the cemetary for a while. We moved to Raleigh, NC in 1998 and we live in a new house here but mom has told that story a few times when people are talking about ghosts at Halloween.
