The office will be closed today for the holiday. However, the Community Events Calendar and other like pages will continue to be updated.

Our post on Monday generated a couple of e-mails regarding Saugus.net's origins. Basically all our servers were organized and put online in January of 1998, our domain was made live on February 9, 1998, Saugus.net was incorporated as an independent not-for-profit entity on May 1, 1998, and the first daily entry was made here on May 4, 1998. We've already held ten Ghost Story Contests, participated in ten Saugus Founders' Days, and covered local elections in eleven calendar years. We usually consider May 1^st our official birthday.

Astute readers may wonder what the site looked like prior to the introduction of the daily entries, or even how the site was accessed before the name "Saugus.net" went live. The answer to the first question is that we had already created several pages (some as early as 1992) that were scattered across the Internet, and these we pulled together and organized to form the original Saugus.net (we'll let you guess which ones are that old). The answer to the second question is that for the first month or so we accessed the site directly by IP number. It certainly wasn't a friendly way to operate, but at that point it was only being used by people actively working on getting it ready for public release.

Saturday marked the tenth anniversary of Saugus.net being online more or less in its present form (bits of it were online much earlier, but not organized in the same general fashion). Almost as if on cue, we got hit with numerous hardware problems and even the accidental hijacking of one of our domains, Newton's Library. While almost everything we run has redundancy, random things here and there may seem a little slow and/or confused while we're waiting for additional servers to arrive (coincidentally we had already planned a hardware upgrade) as we now have a bit less capacity. In the meanwhile, we've temporarily shut down the forums while everything gets straightened out; they should be back soon.

The Saugus High School Alumni Association site has been fairly active lately and was updated again today.

As promised, the detailed Saugus 2008 Town Committee Election results are now available, too.

We've started posting the Saugus 2008 Presidential Primary Election results. Right now all the major Democrat and Republican election results are available; results from the Green and Working Families parties should be available shortly, and detailed Town Committee results for all parties will be available by tomorrow.

Today is election day. Voting locations vary by precinct; if you're unsure of your precinct you can look it up online on the Saugus Town Clerks' site.
